The village Obercunnersdorf is situated at the Southeast corner of Germany in Upper Lusatia and is known as one of the most beautiful places in East Saxony. First mentioned in 1221, it bears a rare witness of the original former rural lifestyle and architecture. The village itselfes is unique, because of the great number of very well preserved old "Umgebindehäuser", a certain type of houses that are common for this region. The connection of block room and trussed arches in one-of-a-kind and makes it to one of the most important construction methods in Europe. There is a loyely ensemble of over 250 traditional timber-framed houses (Umgebindehäuser) in Obercunnersdorf.

The oldest "Umgebindehaus" in our village is the "Schunkelhaus". The small and pretty place was inhabited til 1990. Today, it is used as a museum. The interior of the original block room still contains the painted ceiling and so called "Rutschen" (slides) in front of the windows. It reflects the lifestyle of the Upper Lusatia linen weavers and provides an impression of the former social settings in this area, not only for today but also for future generations.

You are Welcome in the village of the "Umgebindehäuser"

The "Umgebindedorf" in the Upper Lusation uplands attracts coaches, excursions, tourist from all over the world, even TV and movie makers again and again. Visitors of Obercunnersdorf are amazed and thrilled of this fairyland. The famous and smart "Umgebindehäuser" from the weaver-period are stringing together along the village road. They are arrenged picturesquely in the warren of alleys. You can admire above 250 of this buildings of historic importance, with the gardens full of flowers. If you like you could discover the village on one of the two "monumental-paths" with information panels on it or on a guided tour. A tiny house between the brook and the alley, called "Schunkelhaus" in a vernacular, takes up an area of 90 square meter is a example for the use of the remaining area in a almost closed development of a village pasture.

The big and magnificent village churche is build in rural Baroque. A further attraction is the open-air bath: because of the heated pool we can open earlier and close later than the others.

If you go along the road near the open-air bath you will arive the district Kottmarsdorf with the interesting barber museum and the famous windmill. The 150 years old windmill, which can be visitedd, is a fully operative monument. At the near mountain, called Kottmar, you can see the spring of the river "Spree". If you like to hike than you should go to the Kottmar, where for example the "Upper Lusatian mountain-way" crosses the "way of legends". The best starting point for hiking, cycling or sightseeing trips is the Touristinformation located in the centre of Obercunnersdorf.
